SPRING TIPS

MARCH

First mowing is generally carried out in March. Set the cut at 11/2 – 2 inches (35 – 50mm) and only mow if conditions are good (not if frost threatens). Lawns can be raked to remove moss and other debris that may have developed during the winter. A proprietary mosskiller can be applied. The moss will soon turn black and should be removed by raking. An early spring fertilizer can be applied towards the end of the month. If frosts threaten, however, this is better delayed.

Prepare sites for new lawns, applying base fertilizer once a good tilth has been achieved. First sowings of lawn seed can be started this month if conditions are fine.

APRIL

The frequency of mowing should now be increased and the height of cut can be brought down gradually. Utility lawns are generally mown at 1 – 2 inches (20 – 50mm) while finer more ornamental lawns can be cut lower. A spring fertilizer should be applied if not put on in March. Apply a proprietary mosskiller or weedkiller as necessary or a proprietary combined fertilizer plus mosskiller or a fertilizer plus weedkiller product.

This is a good month for seeding a lawn; new lawn constructions should be sown into a carefully prepared seed bed that has been given a light dressing of Growmore at 30g (1oz) per m2. Existing lawns can be oversown with one of the 3 perfect-lawn mixtures. The lawn should first be cut to 15mm or 1/2 inch, then fertilized with a light granular fertilizer, raked in two directions and sown at 20g/m2.

MAY

The existing lawn should be mown frequently (at least once a week) at the desired mowing height. Newly sown lawns should be given a first cut with a mower with sharpened blades to avoid any young seedlings being pulled from the ground. The first mowing should be at 40 – 50mm (2 inches).

Weed control should be carried out during May, using one or more of the proprietary brands available.

Keep new and oversown existing lawns well watered during periods of dry weather to enable seedlings to become established. Remember to water heavily and infrequently rather than lightly and often. This encourages the grass to send down deep roots.

Rake established lawns occasionally to remove any debris with a spring-tine rake. This will remove the remains of any moss or weeds that have been killed by spring treatments.
