AUTUMN TIPS

SEPTEMBER

New lawns can be sown this month following a light dressing of autumn fertilizer. The soil is warm and ideal for grass germination. Remember to water in after sowing, taking care to use a fine rose on your watering can or hose-end applicator to avoid washing away seed.

Continue to mow regularly. Autumn maintenance starts this month. The lawn should be thoroughly raked in two directions. If there is a lot of dead grass and debris below the grass ("thatch"), use a slitting or scarifying tool or mechanical scarifier. If the surface of the soil below the grass seems to be hard and compacted, spike using a garden fork or a hollow-tine fork. There are even motorized spikers now available with either solid or hollow-tines that can be hired for the day.

Apply a proprietary autumn fertilizer to existing and spring-sown lawns. Apply a fungicide if disease has been a problem.

OCTOBER
Gradually reduce the frequency of mowing. Last mowing likely this month. Keep fallen leaves swept from the lawn. Complete raking, spiking or hollow-tining.

NOVEMBER
Keep lawn free from fallen leaves. If not already stopped, mowing should cease by end of this month.

If the weather is fine, new sites can be prepared for sowing new lawn constructions in the spring.
