SUMMER TIPS
JUNE
Mow the lawn regularly at the desired summer height. Grass is growing at its most vigorous now and needs mowing twice a week to keep it looking its best. Raise the height of cut if prolonged dry weather is likely as this helps the grass to resist drought. Rake the lawn using a spring-tine rake occasionally before mowing to improve the cut. Edge the lawn as necessary using hand-held edging shears or a mechanical edger. Newly sown or renovated lawns should be watered frequently in dry weather.
Use a selective weedkiller on any persistent broad-leafed weeds that may be present in established lawns. Any weeds appearing in newly sown turf should be removed by hand.
JULY
Continue to mow and rake as in June. If the weather is warm and dry, a heightened mower cut will help the lawn to withstand summer drought. Repeat any weedkiller treatments as necessary. Stubborn weeds can be painted or sprayed out using proprietary spot treatments. Mow the lawn before you go away on holiday.
AUGUST
Continue regular mowing of the lawn. If somewhat overgrown on your return from holiday, do not cut at the normal summer height. Raise the mowing height to that used in the spring and reduce for the subsequent cut.
Start preparing sites for new lawn construction. Areas should be dug over, stones removed and then raked level to produce a fine seed bed.
