Tetraploid v Diploid Ryegrasses All ryegrass species have both Tetraploid and Diploid varieties. Tetraploids have double the number of chromosomes of Diploids. Tetraploid seeds are double the size of Diploids. The total dry matter yield and seasonal growth pattern are similar for both types. Tetraploids tend to be more palatable to stock. Tetraploids have a higher moisture content which means that silage should be wilted slightly longer and it can be more difficult to make hay. Tetraploids tend to have a higher water soluble content than Diploids. The ratio of Tetraploid to Diploid ryegrass in a mixture should reflect the farm conditions, but generally should be no more than 50:50. |
